Nursery Rhyme Week – Day 4

Today we explored a nursery rhyme that we were not very familiar with, it was called Lavender’s Blue. We listened to the rhyme and tried to join in on the repeated parts:

We looked at pictures of the lavender flowers and talked about what they looked like and what colours they were. We found out that the green part of the lavender is called the stem, and the purple coloured parts are called buds. We then created our own fabulous paintings of the lavender:

We later went outside to find a lavender flower. We saw that it looked just like our paintings, and each had a smell of it:

Nursery Rhyme Week – Day 3

The rhyme we have been exploring today was called Old King Cole. This was a rhyme that we were not very familiar with, however, after a few practises we soon remembered the words and the tune!

We loved performing the rhymes we have been learning so far at the Stay and Play with our parents and carers. We then enjoyed creating our own crowns out of collage materials so we could be just like Old King Cole!

Here are Morning Nursery:

“What does Old King Cole wear on his head?”

“It looks a bit like a hat, but we call it something else starting with a ‘c’ sound…”

Here are afternoon Nursery:

In reference to Old King Cole, #tw said “I think he lives in the castle”

Nursery Rhyme Week – Day 2

The nursery rhyme that we explored today was called Hickory Dickory Dock:

We followed step by step instructions to make a mouse to run up the clock. We talked about what shapes we could see, we saw circles and triangles.

How do you know it’s a triangle?

#mm “it has three sides”

#ms “cos it’s a shape”

How do you know it’s a circle?

#ws “because it goes around and around”

We then looked at a real clock, and during circle time we had a go at naming and matching the number cards around a hoop to make our own clock. In the provision, we then had the chance to create our own clocks with paper plates, using and applying our learning from circle time:

#lj “i’m going to use my clock to tell me what time it is like Mummy”

Nursery Rhyme Week – Day 1

Over 2 million children have taken part in World Nursery Rhyme Week since its launch in 2013. Nursery rhymes play an important role in early childhood development and education. As well as being fun they are excellent teaching tools:

*Language and communication, songs and rhymes are language learners.

*Singing nursery rhymes can help children to develop emergent literacy skills.

*They provide a fun way to assist with learning early maths.

*Nursery rhymes help children to develop social, physical and emotional skills.

The rhyme we focused on today was Wind The Bobbin Up:

We explored colours and patterns using different resources such as coloured links and coloured paper. After we had explored patterns, we then created our own patterns using bobbin reels to print with:

Here are a few key dates for the upcoming week:

  • World Nursery Rhyme Week – Monday 13th – Friday 17th November.
  • Stay and Play – Wednesday 15th November (AM Nursery 11am, PM Nursery 2:45pm).
  • Children in Need – Thursday 16th November (spotty dress up).
  • World Nursery Rhyme Week Celebration Day – Friday 17th November (dress up as favourite nursery rhyme character).

Healthy and Unhealthy Food

Today we have been exploring healthy and unhealthy food and we were set a challenge to help Little Red Riding Hood to make a healthy basket of food for Grandma.

We looked through food magazines and talked about what food would be good for Grandma and carefully cut around the pictures and added them to our baskets.

On our Creative Table we made prints using different fruit and vegetables. We talked about the shapes that we made and the colours that we used.

Fabulous List!

WOW! We are very proud of this little girl for this amazing shopping list that she created independently during Busy Time! She wrote the initial sounds of all the items that she needed on her list and then was able to recall her list to me using the initial sounds of the words.
