Shake, Shake, Shake!

Last week, we brought in some empty plastic bottles and decorated them with collage materials. Today we added rice to the bottles to create shakers! We enjoyed using the shakers during continuous provision to sing songs with, as well as explore the words loud, quiet, fast and slow. This activity linked very well to our Phase 1 phonics learning.

Letters to Father Christmas

Today we made letters to send to Father Christmas.

We began by having a speaking and listening activity. In turn, we told our friends what we would like for Christmas:

#na “I want a big bike”

#ls “Dolly”

#mma “I want Paw Patrol toys for my house”

#bh “Princess”

After we had shared some of the things that we hope to get, we then had a look through some toy magazines to choose some items to add to our letters. We used scissors to cut out the pictures and we were modelled how to hold and use the scissors correctly. Once we had stuck down the pictures, some of us had a go at mark-making and writing initial sounds. We then folded up our letters and sealed them inside an envelope before posting it in our letter box to send to  Father Christmas!

We hope Father Christmas receives our letters, and we can’t wait for Christmas morning to see if he brings us everything that we want!

Moo Music

We have had a great time today joining in with a session with Laura from Moo Music!

We joined in singing lots of different songs, played lots of different instruments and took part in dances to lots of different songs – it was great fun!

Making Bread

Today in Nursery we followed a recipe to make bread, just like the Little Red Hen!

In the story of the Little Red Hen, her friends did not help her make the bread, however in Nursery we all worked together to measure out the ingredients and mix them altogether.

Once the ingredients were all mixed together, we kneaded it and split the mixture up into six equal balls and patted them down. We then put them into the oven.

Whilst the bread was baking, some children created their own recipes and instructions by recalling the ingredients and method that we used.

Unlike in the story of the Little Red Hen, we then shared the bread with our friends and  tucked into it for our snack!

What is in the parcel?

Today an exciting parcel was delivered to Nursery!

Firstly, we passed it around, and feeling and squeezing it we acted like Explorasaurus whilst we suggested what could be inside:

After some predictions, we unwrapped the parcel.

At first, some children thought that there were sticks inside of it. However, through linking it back to the story we are currently learning about, we remembered that it is called wheat.

I posed the question, “Where did the wheat come from?”

#as “It’s like the seed isn’t it?”

Music and Movement

Every week, Mrs Ridell comes in Nursery and carries out Music and Movement sessions. We really look forward to these sessions, and learn lots of new songs, as well as using different musical instruments and moving our bodies in different ways.

Nursery Rhyme Week – Day 3

The rhyme we have been exploring today was called Old King Cole. This was a rhyme that we were not very familiar with, however, after a few practises we soon remembered the words and the tune!

We loved performing the rhymes we have been learning so far at the Stay and Play with our parents and carers. We then enjoyed creating our own crowns out of collage materials so we could be just like Old King Cole!

Here are Morning Nursery:

“What does Old King Cole wear on his head?”

Nursery Rhyme Week – Day 1

Over 2 million children have taken part in World Nursery Rhyme Week since its launch in 2013. Nursery rhymes play an important role in early childhood development and education. As well as being fun they are excellent teaching tools:

*Language and communication, songs and rhymes are language learners.

*Singing nursery rhymes can help children to develop emergent literacy skills.

*They provide a fun way to assist with learning early maths.

*Nursery rhymes help children to develop social, physical and emotional skills.

The rhyme we focused on today was Wind The Bobbin Up:

We explored colours and patterns using different resources such as coloured links and coloured paper. After we had explored patterns, we then created our own patterns using bobbin reels to print with:

Fireworks

Today in Nursery we have been exploring fireworks. During continuous provision, a fireworks display was played for the children to listen to and watch. At carpet time, we then talked about what colours and shapes we could see in the sky on the video.

Inspired by the fireworks, the children then created their own firework paintings by using different lengths of string dipped into colourful paint to pull across their piece of paper.
