What is our new story?

Today we were introduced to a surprise parcel that links to the new story that we will be exploring for the next two weeks. The parcel was wrapped up, and we had to use some of our senses to try and guess what would be inside, and then what story it could be from.

We passed the parcel around the circle and here are some of the children’s responses:

What does it feel like?

#ooj It feels squiggly.

#st Toys.

#dg Potatoes, sounds like potatoes.

#gk It’s soft at the sides. I think its eggs in the box. 

#lj The Little Red Hen wrapped it up for us so we can open it. 

#ms It feels hot and soft. It’s a ball. 

#as It shakes like seeds. 

What does is smell like?

#gj Its like peas. 

#dm Smells like food. 

Can you hear anything when you shake it?

#ws A popping machine

#rp It makes a sound

After some thinking time and questioning, the children opened up the parcel to discover a box of gingerbread men!

I asked the children “so what story could the gingerbread men be from?”

#ws The Gingerbread Man story!

The children were introduced to the story of the Gingerbread Man. We read it and talked about the events, and we saw how the Little Old Man and the Little Old Lady baked some gingerbread men, just like the ones in our box!

We will now continue to learn about this story for the next two weeks.

Characteristics of Effective Learning Assembly

This afternoon Early Years had their first Characteristics of Effective Learning assembly.

It was a great way for the children to celebrate the types of learners that they have been this week, and to share their knowledge and understanding of what the different dinosaurs mean. Each week, three children will be selected from each class who have displayed great examples of the Characteristics of Effective Learning.

Who delivered the bread? 

Today in Nursery we were very excited to find that a basket of fresh bread had been delivered. We passed the bread around in circle time, and talked about where it may have come from and who could have brought it.

#ooj “It is bread, Red Riding Hood bought the bread from Asda”

#lj “She lives in a cottage and had to get the bus to bring the bread to Nursery”

#rr “She lives in a village”

#gk “You bake the bread in the oven”

#dg “Mummy has bread like this in my house”

Inside of the basket was a letter addressed to Nursery, it was from somebody called the Little Red Hen, who told us that she had baked the bread for us.

But who was the Little Red Hen? We read a about her to find out.

After the story, we talked about how kind it was of the Little Red Hen to bake some bread for us, because after all, the animals in the story were not very helpful to her, so it was lovely of her to think to share it with us instead!

We thought it would be a good idea to write a letter back to the Little Red Hen to say thank you. We each had a go at mark-making a letter back to the Little Red Hen, some of us copying from a scribed piece of writing to begin practising our letter formation.

After writing a letter to the Little Red Hen it was time for snack. We used this time to tuck into the delicious fresh bread.

Nursery Rhyme Week – Day 2

The nursery rhyme that we explored today was called Hickory Dickory Dock:

We followed step by step instructions to make a mouse to run up the clock. We talked about what shapes we could see, we saw circles and triangles.

How do you know it’s a triangle?

#mm “it has three sides”

#ms “cos it’s a shape”

How do you know it’s a circle?

#ws “because it goes around and around”

We then looked at a real clock, and during circle time we had a go at naming and matching the number cards around a hoop to make our own clock. In the provision, we then had the chance to create our own clocks with paper plates, using and applying our learning from circle time:

Fabulous List!

WOW! We are very proud of this little girl for this amazing shopping list that she created independently during Busy Time! She wrote the initial sounds of all the items that she needed on her list and then was able to recall her list to me using the initial sounds of the words.

Exploring Shells

During continuous provision this afternoon, these two children were exploring shells and the sounds that they make. This was a lovely example of building positive relationships between each other and it promoted lots of thinking and language between the children.
